Unclaimed property scam check

Real state programs never charge you to search or claim1. Answer the questions about the call, text, email or letter you received, and we show which official warnings apply and how to check it safely.

  1. What the official sources say
  2. The real program sites, state by state
  3. Sources
About the message you received

Did they ask you to pay a fee, a "processing" charge or taxes before you get the money?

Did they ask for your Social Security number, bank login or card number by phone, text or email?

Did they name an exact dollar amount and push you to act quickly?

Did the email come from an address that does not end in .gov, or a link that does not lead to the state site?

Is a company offering to recover the money for a share of it?

Is it a letter from a company you did business with, saying it will send your money to the state?

What the official sources say

Paying to get your money is a warning sign. Official searches and claims are always free1. Federal agencies warn the same way: be cautious of anyone who demands money up front5, and the Treasury charges no fees6.
Do not give personal or bank details to an unexpected caller. Vermont's Treasurer says its office never calls or texts or asks for payment3, and relays a Federal Trade Commission alert that scammers call and text asking for money and personal information3. Claims are filed on the state's own site, which you reach by typing its address yourself.
A specific amount plus urgency is a known tactic. Scammers may give a specific dollar amount, use a fake government name or urge you to act quickly3.
Check the sender. Be skeptical of email claiming to be from a government agency that does not come from a .gov, .mil or fed.us address, and remember even those can be spoofed4. Some state programs use other addresses for their claim sites; the list below gives each state's real one.
This is probably a finder. A message about your property that involves a fee may come from a finder1. Finders are legal in most states, but you can claim yourself for free; contact the state program before you sign2, and check the legal fee limit in your state.
This can be genuine. Before reporting property to the state, a business must try to reach the owner, and sometimes hires a firm to do it2. Contact the company using a number from your own records or its official website, not the one in the letter.

Answer "Yes" to any question to see the matching warnings. Every message deserves the same safe check: find the program yourself and call the number on its official site.
