  • Are finders allowed? Yes.5
  • Contract rules: No finder contract or fee request until 7 months after the holder delivered the property to the State; the Treasurer must approve every finder contract; send a copy of the contract with the claim; the Treasury will not deduct the fee from the payment; the owner may challenge an excessive fee at any time5
  • The law: Miss. Code Ann. § 89-12-255 (read the text)

Before signing with a finder, read how finders work.

  • Report due: November 1 (report and remittance, covering property presumed abandoned as of the preceding June 30)5
  • Due diligence letters to owners: Before reporting, holders must try to contact owners whose whereabouts they know; mailing a notice to the last-known address satisfies the law. Treasury suggests letters at least 60 days before reporting, for property of $50 or more19
  • Where to report: ms.findyourunclaimedproperty.com/…31
  • File format: Electronic only, NAUPA format (.txt, .hrs or .rpt); no Excel; no paper reports31
  • Penalties: Willful failure to report: fine of $5 per day, up to $100; willful refusal to pay/deliver: $5–$100 fine and/or up to 6 months in jail; late reporting/payment: interest of 1% per month (may be reduced or waived for good cause); examination costs if unreported property is found5

Other rules specific to Mississippi

  • Money Match: automatic checks with no claim, including for storm-hit counties21
  • Uncashed state-issued checks (tax refunds, state paychecks, vendor payments) can be claimed only for about six years before reverting to the State4
  • Child support arrears are taken out of approved claims: the Treasurer checks with the Department of Human Services and sends any amount owed to DHS before paying the claimant14
  • Claimants are paid a small statutory interest (1% a year; more for property that earned interest)14

  • Claimed names leave the public search list while the claim is reviewed9
