Unclaimed property claim deadlines by state
In 47 of the states in this table, the state's own rule says owners and heirs can claim at any time. 9 of those mention exceptions, such as estates of people who died without heirs or property the state sold; the exact wording is in the table.
On this page
States generally hold unclaimed property in custody for the owner. The state administrators' association opposes time limits on owners' claims and says owners have the right to reclaim their money in perpetuity61. Each state's law still decides; read your state's rule, especially for estates, savings bonds and safe deposit box contents.
"No deadline" means the first sentence of the state's rule says claims never expire. Where the rule lists exceptions, the second tag says so. Even with no deadline, a state may sell securities or auction safe deposit box contents; you then receive the sale proceeds. A dash means the official sources we could check do not state the rule.
Claim deadlines, state by state
| What the state says | ||
|---|---|---|
| Alabama | No deadline | No time limit: the state holds property in perpetuity until the owner or heirs claim it.1 |
| Alaska | No deadline | No time limit found. The state says it keeps property in perpetuity until the owner or heirs claim it. Once a claim is open, you have 90 days to answer a request for documents.2 |
| Arizona | Read the rule | Claims must be filed within 35 years after the end of the fiscal year (Arizona's fiscal year ends June 30) in which ADOR received the property, despite any shorter limit in another statute, contract or court order. Claims do expire; there is no unlimited window.3 |
| Arkansas | No deadline | No time limit; property is held in perpetuity4 |
| California | No deadline Exceptions | No time limit. Property is held indefinitely and never permanently escheats (Code of Civil Procedure section 1501.5). Exception: county probated estates of deceased persons, which do permanently escheat after set periods.5 |
| Colorado | No deadline Exceptions | No time limit; the State holds property in perpetuity (exception: escheated probate estates become state property after 21 years)6 |
| Connecticut | No deadline | No time limit8 |
| Delaware | No deadline | No time limit9 |
| District of Columbia | No deadline | No time limit10 |
| Florida | No deadline Exceptions | No time limit: the FAQ says there is no statute of limitations, so owners and heirs can claim at any time. DFS's own launch release says 'no deadline for most owners'. The statutory exception is US savings bonds, which the state may escheat by court action (s. 717.1382).11 |
| Georgia | No deadline Exceptions | No time limit, except excess funds from the sale of an abandoned motor vehicle (one year)13 |
| Guam | Read the rule | Effectively one year for transferred bank and association accounts: the statute says there is no statute of limitations, but claims must be initiated under the Claims Act within one (1) year of the date of transfer, and the funds escheat to the government of Guam one year after transfer.14 |
| Hawaii | Read the rule | Claims for amounts under $100 must be made within 10 years of deposit into the unclaimed property trust fund, after which the funds escheat to the State general fund (Act 184, SLH 2014; HRS 523A-19). No limit is stated for larger amounts.15 |
| Idaho | No deadline | No time limit; Idaho holds the money forever until the owner or heirs claim it16 |
| Illinois | No deadline | No time limit17 |
| Indiana | Read the rule | Claims expire: the state holds property for 25 years. After that it can no longer be claimed and becomes state property.18 |
| Iowa | No deadline | No time limit19 |
| Kansas | No deadline | No time limit for cash; property is never forfeited to the state. Shares are sold within 6–12 months of receipt and safe deposit box contents within 3 years, after which the cash proceeds stay claimable forever.20 |
| Kentucky | No deadline Exceptions | No time limit: the Treasury says unclaimed property is always available to the owner. Property is held in custody for the owner; if sold, net proceeds are paid. Separate rules apply to US savings bonds (KRS 393.022) and workers' compensation assessment refunds (KRS 393.063).21 |

| Michigan | No deadline | No time limit; held in perpetuity27 |
| Minnesota | No deadline | No time limit: the State holds property in perpetuity until the owner or heirs claim it.28 |

| Missouri | No deadline | No time limit; property is held forever.30 |
| Montana | None stated | No filing deadline appears in Part 8 or on the state pages we read, though neither says "no time limit" in those words. Once a claim is open, requested information is due within 6 months or the claim is denied; it can then be reopened or restarted.31 |

| Nevada | No deadline | No time limit: the state holds property in perpetuity until the owner or heirs claim it.33 |

| Ohio | Read the rule | Funds first reported after Jan. 1, 2016 escheat to the state on the 10th anniversary of their reporting date. Funds first reported on or before Jan. 1, 2016 escheated on Jan. 1, 2026. Escheated funds can still be claimed on or before Jan. 1, 2036.
