How to search for Massachusetts unclaimed property
The official search is at findmassmoney.gov/app/claim-search.1 You may see it called Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Division; site name FindMassMoney.gov.9
Which names and places to try: how to search well.
Fast-track and automatic payments
- Paperless Fast Track: an SSN match may auto-approve the claim with no forms or further evidence. No dollar limit is stated.5
Massachusetts' records can also be searched through MissingMoney.com.10
Property the state program does not hold
These official bodies keep their own records, searched separately:
- Unpaid Check Fund (State Treasurer): uncashed state agency checks, held for a year before they move to the Unclaimed Property Division. Claims must be started by contacting the Fund ((617) 367-0400 x3); they cannot be started online. The Fund also lists [email protected] and a mailing address (One Ashburton Place, 12th Floor, Boston, MA 02108); its hours are Monday-Friday 8:45am to 5:00pm.11
- Cities, towns and districts that accept c. 200A §9A may keep their own abandoned funds (for example uncashed municipal checks marked void after 1 year). The local treasurer must mail notices or post them on the municipal website (deadline at least 60 days), then publish in a county newspaper. For $100 or more, a further newspaper notice gives a final deadline at least 1 year after publication. After that the funds escheat to the city, town or district. Before escheat, the local treasurer hears claims; an adverse claimant may appeal within 20 days to the district, municipal or superior court.12
How to claim unclaimed property in Massachusetts, step by step
Claims start online; documents can be uploaded or mailed.2 Cost: Free.5
- Search the Division's site. A last or business name, or a Property ID from an outreach letter, is required; city and ZIP narrow the results.1
- Select your property and start the claim.13
- Enter your details, including the current mailing address where the funds will be sent, and your relationship to the owner.14
- Review and submit to generate your claim number.14
- Watch your email: an eligible claim is auto approved under Fast Track; otherwise you get a claim form by email.2
- If you got a claim form, read Section C to see which documents your claim needs.2
- Upload the form and documents through the secure link, or mail them.2
- Check progress on the status page with your claim number.15
- Notary: Affidavits (Heirs, Lost Stock, Lost Bond, Lost Check, Endorsement) must be notarized. Electronic signatures are not accepted on claim forms. No page says that the ordinary claim form needs a notary.5
- Interest: Yes, by statute: interest at one-twelfth of one percent per month from receipt by the Treasurer to payment. If the property was interest-bearing when surrendered, interest is instead up to five-twelfths of one percent per month, or the lower rate it earned with the holder, and stops after 14 years from delivery.16
- Property of a minor: You may help a minor complete and sign the form, but the claim is filed in the minor's name and paid to the minor. UGMA/UTMA property is paid to the appointed trustee until the minor turns 21.5
- If a claim is denied: The Treasurer sends a written decision. Within 20 days the claimant may ask for a hearing and redetermination. The Treasurer decides within 30 days after the hearing. A claimant adversely affected may appeal within 20 days of the notice to the district, municipal or superior court of the county where they live, with a trial de novo, and then to the Supreme Judicial Court within 20 days.16
The general process is in our how to claim guide.

Finder fees and heir finders in Massachusetts
The legal limit in Massachusetts: 10% of the property; no added legal or filing fees.6 Among the flat caps in our finder-fee comparison, 1 is lower and 11 are higher. You never need a finder: claiming directly is free.5
- Are finders allowed? Yes, but only agreements made after the first 24 months6

The original must be signed, dated and notarized, not handwritten, and filed with the initial claim. Heir finders must register, cannot act as power of attorney, and payment goes only to the owner.6
- The law: M.G.L. c. 200A, §13; 960 CMR 4.063 (read the text)
Before signing with a finder, read how finders work.

- Only two sites are suggested, to avoid scams.10
- Contact the Division before signing any heir finder agreement.10

- The State charges nothing and can help as much as a third party.10
- A mailed letter with a Claim ID you did not start is real, and part of Fast Track.8

Other rules specific to Massachusetts
- Law: M.G.L. c. 200A (Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Act); regulations at 960 CMR 4.0010
- Heir finders must wait until the Treasurer has held property for 24 months, must register and renew every three years, and cannot obtain claim forms; the claimant must.6
- The $10,000 heir finder bond in the regulation is not being enforced now.6
- Stocks and mutual funds are kept three years; afterward the Treasurer may sell them, and the claimant gets the full sale proceeds.5
- Safe deposit contents are held at least a year before auction; proceeds stay claimable indefinitely. The Division lists an eBay page for tangible property and takes sign-ups for auction notices.3
- Military medals are never auctioned; the Division seeks veterans agency help to return them.3
- Firearms found in tangible property go to the State Police.3
- Each claim gets three levels of staff approval before payment.3
- State agency checks reach the Unpaid Check Fund after 1 year (180 days for Executive Office of Health and Human Services checks), and move to Unclaimed Property a year later if unclaimed.11
- Certain unclaimed funds go to the Stabilization Fund and General Fund each June 30, about $461 million in FY25, while owners keep their right to claim.27
- Search limits: online results exclude items under $1.00 and certain property types; a phone search covers everything.1
- The Division staffs a booth at outside events such as fairs and expos.10
- Translation help by phone.7
- Separate contacts: securities [email protected]; tangible [email protected]; heir finders [email protected].7
- Massachusetts holders may report for 29 reciprocal jurisdictions, listed in the manual.23
- Tangible property deliveries (for example safe deposit box contents) must be scheduled in advance, Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm, between May 1 and June 30. Contents must be sent "as is": coins are not converted to cash and old paper money is not replaced.28
- Payment for a claim filed with an heir finder's help goes only to the owner, never to the heir finder. No claim form is sent until the owner or their legal representative has contacted the Division directly.3
- Before paying, the Treasurer checks claimants against past-due child support and Massachusetts tax debts (reviewed each January and quarterly). For a sole owner, the money goes first to child support, then to the Department of Revenue, and only the remainder is paid to the claimant. Co-owners are notified first and can request an administrative review.16
- A holder of an abandoned money order, cashier's check or similar instrument may charge no more than $1 per instrument to process it to the Treasurer.29
