Unclaimed property dormancy periods by state

A dormancy period is how long property can sit without any contact from its owner before the business holding it must report it as unclaimed and send it to the state. The table gives the periods each state's own law or program states, by type of property, with a footnote to the source for every figure.

What the states have in common

  • General dormancy for most property: 3 years in 32 programs, 5 years in 21 programs.
  • Checking and savings accounts: 3 years in 26 programs, 5 years in 25 programs, 2–10 years in 1 program, 5–10 years in 1 program, 3–6 years in 1 program.
  • Wages and payroll: 1 year in 46 programs, 3 years in 4 programs, 5 years in 2 programs, 2 years in 1 program.
  • Traveler's checks: 15 years in 51 programs, 3 years in 1 program.
  • Money orders: 7 years in 35 programs, 5 years in 6 programs, 3 years in 6 programs, 5–7 years in 1 program.

A range such as "1–3" means the state sets different periods for sub-types (for example, uncashed payroll checks and payroll cards); the state's page lists each one. "See rule" means the period depends on the case. A dash means the state's sources we could check give no separate period for that type; it does not mean the type is exempt.

New to this? What unclaimed property is explains dormancy; holders can start with unclaimed property for businesses.

Life insurance covers matured or terminated policies and annuities; demutualization proceeds and other insurance property often have their own periods, listed on each state's page. Holders should read the state's statute or holder manual before filing: periods start from different events (last owner activity, maturity, a returned mailing) depending on the type.
