How to search for Kentucky unclaimed property
The official search is at kyclaims.unclaimedproperty.com/en/Property/SearchIndex.1 The program's information pages are at treasury.ky.gov.10
Which names and places to try: how to search well.
Fast-track and automatic payments
- The Treasurer may waive the claim form and pay directly for property under $250, if the person is shown as the apparent owner on a holder report and the Treasurer reasonably believes they are entitled. This is discretionary.15
Kentucky's records can also be searched through MissingMoney.com.16
How to claim unclaimed property in Kentucky, step by step
Partly online. You can search, add properties to a claims cart, request a claim form and check claim status online, but the claim form must be returned with an original signature (no faxed, scanned or emailed forms).3 Cost: Statute directs a deduction: the Treasurer shall deduct proportionate advertising and operating costs, at least $1, from any allowed claim over $10. Whether and how much is deducted in practice could not be confirmed.11
- Search free on the Treasury's claim portal (kyclaims.unclaimedproperty.com) or at MissingMoney.com, for yourself, family, your business or employer.5
- If you see your name and can verify the address as your current or former address, request a claim form online.5
- Complete the claim form and sign it. The Treasury needs your original signature: faxed, scanned, photocopied or emailed forms are not accepted.5
- Attach proof: a government-issued photo ID and proof of Social Security number for each signer; proof that you lived at the reported address if it differs from your current one; plus the extra documents for your situation (heir, minor, trust, POA, business).4
- Return the signed form and proof by mail to the Unclaimed Property Division, or bring it in person in Frankfort. Several claims can go in one envelope with one set of proof.5
- Exception: money still held by a bank in an interest-bearing account assigned to the Treasury is claimed in writing from the bank (holder), not the Treasury.6
- The Treasurer must allow or deny the claim within 90 days and give notice of the decision.7
- If denied, you are told why and what evidence is missing. You can file an amended claim or request a hearing.7
- Within 30 days after approval, the property or net sale proceeds are paid, after any debts the law requires be paid first.17
- Check claim status online with your ZIP code and claim ID, or by email with your claim number.2
- Interest: Bank-deposit property earns interest at the old account's contract rate while it sits with the holder, but the Treasurer need not credit interest after receiving it. No general provision paying interest on other property held by the Treasurer was found.18
- Property of a minor: Claim for a minor child: send proof of the minor's SSN and a copy of the birth certificate. The regulation also accepts a guardianship or trust agreement and pays a court-appointed guardian.4
- If a claim is denied: Statute: request a written administrative hearing within 1 year after filing the claim. Regulation: within 30 days of denial. The two differ; the 30-day date is the earlier one. Final orders may go to Franklin Circuit Court within 90 days of issuance.19
The general process is in our how to claim guide.
Documents you need, by situation
These are the official requirements. The claim form for a specific property can ask for more.
Claiming your own property
- Individual: proof of ownership may be one of: driver's license or other government picture ID, a document proving Social Security number, birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, a financial institution's signature verification card, or a guardianship or trust agreement.6
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree: either copy is on the regulation's list of accepted ownership proofs. The regulation does not label them specifically as name-change documents.6
- If primary items are unavailable: tax return, adoption records, court records, certificate of deposit, stale-dated checks, public or business records, newspaper articles, family or church records, personal correspondence, or a notarized affidavit from someone else with knowledge of the claim.6
- Over $400, checking: a check or statement showing the account number. Savings: passbook copy or correspondence referencing the account number.6
- Over $400, court funds: the decree or order for the source case.6
- If ownership cannot be proved with the listed items, the Treasury may accept alternative proof.6
- All claims (Treasury instructions): government-issued photo ID and proof of SSN for each signer, the completed claim form with original signature, and proof of the reported address if it differs from your current mailing address. If no address was reported, proof of a business relationship with the reporting company before the year reported.4
- Lost Social Security card: a W-2, tax return or other official document showing your name and SSN is accepted.5
- Trust: copy of the trust, proof of the trust's tax ID number, and the trustee's death certificate if the trustee is deceased.4
- Aggregate (unnamed, under $100) property: the holder must send the Treasury a letter with the amount owed, the year reported, the report total and the owner information; the Treasury then sends a claim form.5
A former address or a name change
- Former address: documentation connecting you to the reported address or business for the year shown as Date of Last Transaction, if the primary items are unavailable or not applicable.6
- Name change: proof such as a marriage certificate, divorce papers or other court documents.4
The owner has died (estate)
- Death certificate plus a probate or court document or small estate affidavit. Payment goes to the estate representative or to an heir for distribution to other heirs. The program's small-estate dollar threshold was not found in the sources we read.6
- Deceased owner: death certificate plus one of: probate distribution, order appointing an estate administrator, order dispensing with administration, or small estate affidavit.6
- Decedent: only the executor/administrator or next of kin may claim. Provide the owner's SSN proof and death certificate. Open estate: a current appointment, received within 60 days of issuance by the court. Closed estate: the appointment and Final Order of Distribution. No estate: staff decide what else is needed.4
You are an heir
- Heir, property over $400: final decree of probate, or if intestate, an order dispensing with administration, or an order appointing an administrator plus that administrator's letter allowing release.6
A business or government agency
- Over $400, business vendor checks: billing or invoices, bills of lading, correspondence showing the business relationship, or a statement that the funds are still due.6
- Business, government agency or other organization: instead of an individual's SSN, give proof of the entity's tax ID number (FEIN/EIN), plus a government photo ID for the person signing.4
- Business: written proof of authority to claim (letter of authorization, Secretary of State annual report, corporate resolution or board minutes), Form 851 affiliation schedule, and sale or dissolution papers if applicable. Dissolved businesses also need a Dissolved Business Affidavit from the office.4
Securities, safe deposit boxes and other cases
- Over $400, safe deposit box: rental receipt or correspondence referencing the rental.6
- Over $400, wages: W-2, tax records, pay stub, or employment correspondence.6
- Over $400, securities: stock certificate copy, related correspondence, or broker statement. Bearer bonds and CDs have their own lists.6
- Over $400, insurance: policy copy or policy correspondence.6
- Cashier's checks: the payee shows proof of identity, unless the purchaser documents a superior claim.6
- Minor child: proof of the minor's SSN and a copy of the birth certificate.4
- Power of attorney, guardian or conservator: owner's SSN proof and a copy of the POA agreement or appointment.4
- Joint owners must file together; if not possible, send supporting documents such as the joint owner's death certificate, a divorce property settlement, a quit-claim deed or a letter of release.5

How long it takes, how you are paid and the deadline
Processing time
- Decision within 90 days of filing. No action within 90 days means the claim is deemed denied. Payment within 30 days after allowance.7
How you are paid
Kentucky pays by check and does not offer direct deposit, so keep the mailing address on your claim current.
- Paper check mailed to the address on the claim form; no direct deposit. Approved securities are transferred electronically to an account in the owner's name, and any unpaid cash or dividends are paid by check. Payment can go to the owner, an estate representative, a guardian or an heir.5
Deadline
Owners and heirs in Kentucky generally have no deadline, but the rule has exceptions.
- No time limit: the Treasury says unclaimed property is always available to the owner. Property is held in custody for the owner; if sold, net proceeds are paid. Separate rules apply to US savings bonds (KRS 393.022) and workers' compensation assessment refunds (KRS 393.063).5

Other states: dormancy periods table.
- Minimum amounts: No general minimum. Items under $50 may be reported in the aggregate without owner name and address. Unpaid wages of $50 or less are exempt.32
- Gift cards: Gift cards are excluded from reportable property. A gift card is a stored-value card whose value does not expire, that can only be redeemed for goods or services, and that cannot be converted to money unless law requires. Loyalty cards, in-store return credits and game-related digital content are also excluded.33
- Published lists of owners: Newspaper notice not required. The Treasurer must keep a public searchable website or database, and may use other media. Regulation: department notifies by website posting and may add newspaper notice or individual contact.34
Finder fees and heir finders in Kentucky
The legal limit in Kentucky: 10% of the value of the property collected.9 Among the flat caps in our finder-fee comparison, 1 is lower and 11 are higher.
- Are finders allowed? Yes, within limits. An agreement is void if made from the date of presumed abandonment until 24 months after delivery to the state, except an owner's agreement with an attorney to file a claim on identified property or contest a denial.9
- Contract rules: Must be written and signed by the apparent owner, state the property and services, and state the value before and after the fee. Unconscionable pay can be reduced in court. Ads, letters and agreements must disclose the 24-month and 10% rules. The Treasury also requires a notarized contract with parties' names, addresses and SSN or FEIN, the owner's notarized affidavit that the finder explained the property may be claimed free, and the same proof the owner would submit.9
- The law: KRS 393.117; also KRS 393A.760 (agents) and 20 KAR 1:040, Section 2(5)9 (read the text)
Before signing with a finder, read how finders work.
How to spot Kentucky unclaimed property scams
Kentucky's official search is not on a .gov address: it is kyclaims.unclaimedproperty.com,1 linked from the program's site treasury.ky.gov.10 Reach it from the program's own pages rather than from an ad or a message.
What Kentucky warns about
- Finders must have the owner swear that the finder explained the property may be claimed without a fee.6
- The Treasury may contact the owner directly to confirm they know the full amount involved.6
- The Unclaimed Property Division will never ask for your credit card or banking information; search free at MissingMoney.com or call (800) 465-4722.16
- Do not pay anyone to tell you how to find unclaimed property; paid sites usually just send you to the state's free search.5
- A fee finder is not needed to claim your property; try to find it yourself before signing a contract.5
- Fake letters on NAUPA letterhead asking for money to release unclaimed property are fraud; NAUPA does not notify owners.16
Unsure about a letter, text or call? Try the scam check or read how to spot a fake notice.

For businesses: reporting unclaimed property to Kentucky
- Report due: By November 1 for the 12 months ending June 30. Insurance companies: before May 1 for the prior calendar year. Statute says 'before November 1'; the regulation says no later than close of business November 1, so file early. A holder may ask for an extension before the due date; the Treasurer may grant one, and a partial payment stops interest on the amount paid.35
- Due diligence letters to owners: First-class mail notice 60 to 180 days before filing, for property of $50 or more with a usable address, plus email if the owner consented to email.36
- Where to report: kyholder.unclaimedproperty.com/Account/Login37
- File format: Electronic filing through the portal, payment with the report. No report is required if the holder has no presumed-abandoned property. Safe deposit contents are delivered no sooner than 120 days after the report, with 5 business days' notice of delivery.38
- Penalties: Late: interest at the KRS 131.183 tax rate plus up to $200 a day, maximum $5,000. Willful failure, evasion, or fraudulent or deficient reports: up to $1,000 a day, maximum $25,000, plus 25% of the property. The deficient-report wording took effect July 15, 2026.39
- Voluntary disclosure: No named voluntary disclosure program found in the law we read; the holder handbook could not be read. The Treasurer may waive interest and penalties, and shall waive the KRS 393A.730(2) penalty for good faith without negligence.41
New to this? See who must report. Other states' dates are in the holder reporting deadlines table.
Other rules specific to Kentucky
- Law: KRS Chapter 393A (Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act), with KRS Chapter 393 (Escheats) and regulations at 20 KAR Chapter 1. apps.legislature.ky.gov/…42
- Uniform act: Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act43
- Bank deposits stay with the bank longer: after the 3-year presumption they move to an interest-bearing account at the holder, and reach the Treasurer after 10 more years or on actual abandonment. Claims on those accounts go to the bank.18
- These accounts earn the old account's contract rate, and holder fees cannot reduce them after the presumption date.44
- Your claim can be reduced by child support arrears, certain fines and restitution, or delinquent state or local taxes, and you are notified of the payment.17
- Fourth week of September is Unclaimed Property Week, created by 2026 Ky. Acts ch. 78.45
- US savings bonds can permanently escheat to Kentucky: 3 years after presumed abandonment, through a Franklin Circuit Court action. After judgment, payment to a requester is at the Treasurer's discretion.30
- Virtual currency is liquidated by the holder within 90 days before reporting. The owner gets no later gains.46
- Military medals and decorations cannot be sold, and can be placed with veterans groups, the awarding agency, a governmental entity, or the Kentucky Historical Society or an approved museum or historical society.47
- Safe deposit contents are kept in the Treasury vault and inventoried by category, including firearms, jewelry, military items, stamps and wills. Tangible items can be auctioned after 3 years, and owners are credited the proceeds.48
- Sold securities: claims after the 3-year period get the securities if still held, or net sale proceeds, with no later appreciation. An owner can ask for an earlier sale.49
- If you claim from the holder between July 1 and August 1, the holder does not report the property. Between August 1 and January 1, the holder certifies the return to the Treasury.50
- Before paying a claim a holder must ask the Treasury about competing claims; the Treasury answers within 10 business days.6
- Budget: $2,086,600 in FY2026-27 and $2,058,600 in FY2027-28 from the Unclaimed Property Fund pays for the Division's services. This is the operating budget, not the amount held.51
- A person not known to be living for 7 successive years, whose heirs cannot be located, is presumed to have died without heirs.52
- Claims up to $4,999.99 need approval by two Treasurer-designated Treasury employees; claims above $4,999.99 need three.6
- A holder that receives a claim may send the claimant to the Treasury instead of paying it.6
- Kentucky's unclaimed property law (KRS Chapter 393A) does not cover: property from foreign transactions held in a foreign country; money owed to or held by 501(c)(3) nonprofits; fuel minerals and mineral proceeds; wages of $50 or less unclaimed for 1 year (unless on a payroll card); jail inmate and canteen accounts; or lawyer IOLTA trust accounts.53
- The Treasury runs a booth at the Kentucky State Fair every year, where people can search the database and start claims.5
- The Treasury matches owner names and tax ID numbers against other databases and mails claim forms unprompted to owners it locates.5
- Dollar amounts are released only on the official claim form; MissingMoney.com shows only whether most properties are over or under $100.5
- Kentucky does not issue 1099s for returned property.5
- Dividends and stock splits that occur while securities are held by the state are added to the owner's property.5
- Negative (zero) reports are no longer required from holders in Kentucky.21
