Which names and places to try: how to search well.

Fast-track and automatic payments

  • By law the Treasurer may waive the claim-form requirements and pay the apparent owner directly once the person's identity and address are validated.4

Property the state program does not hold

These official bodies keep their own records, searched separately:

  • County clerk lists of unclaimed mineral interests: Not a separate claims program: the Treasurer sends each county clerk the names and last-known addresses of owners of unclaimed mineral interests in that county, and the clerk keeps the list for public viewing. Claims are still made to the State Treasurer.4
  • County treasurers and court clerks report to the state: Uncashed county warrants, matured county bonds/warrants and court clerk funds (probate money, judgments incl. child support and condemnation money, appeal bonds) are reported to the State Treasurer after one year, so they are searched and claimed at the state, not the county.9

How to claim unclaimed property in Oklahoma, step by step

Claims are filed online at yourmoney.ok.gov and documents uploaded online (PDF, TIF, PNG or JPG; max 10 MB per file; file names up to 100 characters, letters/numbers/dashes/underscores only; no password-protected or redacted files). Some claims need original documents mailed.2 Cost: Free.7

  1. Search: go to the Property Search page and type your name (first, last or both) in the Last Name/Business Name field; narrow by city or ZIP if there are too many results.10
  2. Select the properties that may be yours, click CLAIM, then CONTINUE TO FILE CLAIM.10
  3. Enter your claimant information, including the current mailing address where the check will be sent (the site may ask you to confirm the address).3
  4. Preview and SUBMIT to create the claim and get a claim number.3
  5. Read the email you receive: the attached claim form lists exactly what your claim needs. Most claims need the signed claim form, a photo ID copy and a document showing your Social Security number.11
  6. Upload the documents through the secure upload page (Claim ID + email needed).11
  7. Track the claim online with your claim number on the Status page.12
  8. If you lost the claim number, check your inbox and spam for the confirmation email, or contact the office.13
  • Notary: Not always: online claims use an electronic signature under penalty of perjury, but the Division may ask for a notarized signature on the claim form when ownership proof is insufficient.9
  • Interest: No interest on cash. For non-cash property (e.g., stock), the owner gets dividends, interest or other increments that accrued before the state sold it; no claim for later appreciation or earnings after sale.4
  • Property of a minor: Property of a minor is paid to the court-appointed guardian (or a legal representative such as a custodian claims for the owner).9
  • If a claim is denied: If a claim is denied, the Treasurer may hold a hearing (Administrative Procedures Act); the claimant may file a protest heard by a hearing examiner, and the written decision is the final agency decision, appealable to District Court under the Administrative Procedures Act. The claimant must prove entitlement by a preponderance of the evidence.4

The general process is in our how to claim guide.

  • Deceased owner, estate value over $10,000 (rule) / $10,000 or more (statute): certified Letters of Administration or Letters Testamentary naming you personal representative, or a certified Decree of Distribution; plus a government-issued certified death record when the property is $10,000 or more9

  • Heir of a bank, credit union or savings and loan account: Oklahoma's bank small-estate affidavit (6 O.S. §906), sworn and signed by all known heirs, stating no will and no pending probate; available when the deceased's single-owner deposits total $50,000 or less14

  • Gift cards: Unredeemed gift certificates are listed as reportable after 5 years on the state's holder checklist; the Act itself has no gift-card exemption or special section.18
  • Published lists of owners: At least two newspaper notices in the year after the report, in a legal newspaper in the county of the owner's last-known address (items under $250 may be omitted); new owner names posted online, with a newspaper advertisement at least once each calendar quarter in every county. Finder fees and heir finders in Oklahoma

The legal limit in Oklahoma: 25% of the value recovered.4 Among the flat caps in our finder-fee comparison, 24 are lower and 2 are higher. You never need a finder: claiming directly is free.7

  • Are finders allowed? Yes.4
  • Contract rules: Agreement must be in writing and signed by the claimant (by hand or electronically). For mineral proceeds the fee cannot include a share of the minerals or any royalty/production payment. If the owner died without agreeing to the fee, it can be collected only from each heir, devisee or legatee who agreed in writing. The representative must file the signed written agreement (including a power of attorney) with the claim; the rules also require the contract to show the fee percentage and the names, addresses and SSN/FEIN of all parties, plus a special power of attorney. The Division may contact the owner to make sure they know the full amount. No waiting period after the property is reported is set.4
  • The law: 60 O.S. §674.1 (limit on service fees); also §651(6), (22) and §674(A)(3), (E); OAC 735:80-7-2(b)(13)4 (read the text)

How to spot Oklahoma unclaimed property scams

Oklahoma's official search is on yourmoney.ok.gov, a .gov address.1

What Oklahoma warns about

  • The Treasurer's office and its Unclaimed Property Division will not call you asking for money or private information.20
  • Beware of calls promising unclaimed property refunds and of 'protection' offers sold over the phone, including made-up certificates.20
  • If an unknown caller contacts you, hang up and call the listed number yourself: (405) 521-4273.20
  • Questions about whether the claim website is legitimate: call (405) 521-4273.1
  • In large-estate cases, heir finders look for big claims and often end up receiving 25% of the money.20

Unsure about a letter, text or call? Try the scam check or read how to spot a fake notice.

For businesses: reporting unclaimed property to Oklahoma

  • Report due: Before November 1 each year for property reportable as of the preceding July 1; life insurance companies before May 1 (as of the preceding March 1). The Treasurer may postpone the date on written request.4
  • Due diligence letters to owners: Written notice to the apparent owner not more than 120 days before filing, for property of $50 or more (and recurring payments under $50), when the holder has an address not known to be wrong. Email may be added if the owner consented; first-class mail satisfies the duty.4
  • Where to report: yourmoney.ok.gov/app/submit-a-report7
  • File format: Electronic NAUPA-format file required for 15 or more items (no paper detail); a manual online report tool replaces the paper report for smaller filers; mineral proceeds use property code MI02 with well and legal-description detail. Every report needs a notarized Verification and Checklist (Form 496-UP) mailed with the check.22
  • Penalties: Interest at 10% a year on late property; willful failure to report or perform duties: $100 a day up to $5,000; willful failure to pay or deliver: 25% of the property value; willful refusal after written demand: misdemeanor, $500-$5,000 fine and/or up to 6 months in jail. Interest and penalties may be waived for reasonable cause.4
  • Voluntary disclosure: Compliance Assistance Program: a business signs a commitment form and gets up to one year to come into compliance, with a look-back of up to 10 years, and the Treasurer waives interest and penalties for those years. The Treasurer may also announce amnesty programs.23

Other rules specific to Oklahoma

  • Law: Oklahoma Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, 60 O.S. §651 et seq. (Title 60, Sections 651-688); rules: Oklahoma Administrative Code 735:808
  • Uniform act: Uniform Unclaimed Property Act (1981), as amended by Oklahoma (latest amendments Laws 2025, c. 421, eff. Nov. 1, 2025)4
  • Open-data download: citing SB 999, the Division publishes unclaimed property records as downloadable CSV files (a Regular Holder File and an Insurance Holder File; users need to be able to download a file larger than 2 GB), updated annually; both files last updated 10/28/2026.24
  • Two satellite offices outside Oklahoma City, in Muskogee and Clinton; call ahead for appointments.8
  • Oil and gas is a big part of Oklahoma unclaimed property: mineral royalties and lease payments are reportable, holders must report owners of unclaimed mineral interests, and a mineral interest whose proceeds stay unclaimed for 15 years can be sold through district court under Title 84.4
  • Wills in safe deposit boxes: if a will or trust was in a box delivered to the state, the Treasurer gives a copy on request to a claimant who shows the death and apparent ownership (added Nov. 1, 2025).4
  • Weapons found in abandoned safe deposit boxes may be refused by the Treasurer and given to the local sheriff or police.4
  • Securities: if an approved claimant does not transfer returned securities into their own name within 90 days, the Treasurer may sell them and pay cash.4
  • Safe deposit box contents worth selling are auctioned publicly after a newspaper notice at least three weeks before the sale; the owner keeps the right to the sale proceeds.4
  • The program moved from the Oklahoma Tax Commission to the State Treasurer in 1999-2000.4
  • Rural cooperatives domiciled in Oklahoma (electric, telephone, rural water/sewer/gas districts, agricultural co-ops) do not turn over patronage dividends, capital credits, customer deposits or uncashed payment checks to the state.4
  • Claimant information such as Social Security numbers, birth certificates and contact details may be kept confidential by the Treasurer.4
  • Using the wrong form voids a claim: claims must be on the Treasurer's prescribed claim form.4
  • Joint owners: if a report does not give each co-owner's share, the state may pay each owner an equal share.9
  • 2026 goal: expand data sharing among state agencies to raise claim output by 60%.21
