Which names and places to try: how to search well.

Property the state program does not hold

These official bodies keep their own records, searched separately:

  • No separate county or city unclaimed property program is listed by the state. Maine courts, municipalities and government bodies turn property over to the Treasurer after one year.8
  • State-issued checks: contact the issuing agency for missing checks; the Treasurer's page also lists a Check Reissue Form and Check Status link.9

How to claim unclaimed property in Maine, step by step

Claims can be filed online on the official site.2 Cost: Free.2

  1. Search by last or business name and first name; add city or ZIP only to narrow results.1
  2. Select the property and continue to file a claim.10
  3. Choose your relationship to the owner for each property (Owner, Heir or Representative).3
  4. Enter your details, including the current mailing address where funds will be mailed.3
  5. Review and submit to get a claim number.3
  6. Check the email sent to you: any required signed claim form or documents are listed on the claim form attached to it.11
  7. Upload documents online (PDF, TIF, PNG or JPG, 10MB per file) or mail them. Claims that need originals must be mailed.12
  8. Track the claim with your claim number.13
  • Notary: On the mail-in form a notary is required when the property is valued over $1,500. All affidavits (estate, business, legal representative, joint owner) are signed before a notary.14
  • Interest: Interest on interest-bearing savings accounts and CDs for up to 10 years from receipt, at the current 10-year average cash pool rate. Dividends on stock accrue while held.2
  • Property of a minor: For a UGMA account the custodian is paid until the minor reaches 18, then the beneficiary directly. A parent with parental rights and responsibilities files the Legal Representative Affidavit for a minor owner.2
  • If a claim is denied: After a denial, file an amended claim or sue in Superior Court of Kennebec County within one year.15

The general process is in our how to claim guide.

Documents you need, by situation

These are the official requirements. The claim form for a specific property can ask for more.

Claiming your own property

  • Asks for the property ID, owner name, property description, claimant address and phone, the claimant's SSN or TIN, and the owner's SSN or TIN and date of birth. Mail the original signed form.14
  • You may be asked for supporting documents based on the relationship chosen. Not all items require proof of ownership. If you hold the original document (a check, passbook or bond), send a copy; the original may be required later.2
  • Generally not eligible unless they fit a listed relationship.14
  • Abstracts of legal documents are not accepted.2

A former address or a name change

  • Search old records such as tax records or W2s. If you cannot prove the address, file anyway and say so.2
  • Legal documentation such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order may be requested.2

The owner has died (estate)

  • Checks go to the estate of the deceased owner, not the claimant. For unprobated estates, a check can go to the claimant with a completed Affidavit of a Small Estate plus legal proof of relationship; the Treasurer's Estate Affidavit (rev. 09.01.20) says for claims up to $40,000. The statutory small-estate limit is inflation-adjusted by year of death: see smallEstateLimit ($52,500 for deaths in 2026).16
  • Estate Affidavit, notarized, filed with the claim form; further documents depend on the facts and are requested in writing.2
  • Sworn Affidavit of a Small Estate in Maine, with copies of the death certificate and the will, if any, attached. It can be used with the Treasurer's Estate Affidavit, and the claimant takes on the responsibility of a personal representative.17
  • Affidavit and Agreement Supporting Claim by Surviving Joint Owner, notarized.18

You are an heir

  • Estate Affidavit; if there is no will, list heirs in section 4. A will must be presented on request if you claim under one.16

A business or government agency

  • Business Affidavit, notarized. TIN required if the business is open. Proof of acquisition if the claimant acquired the listed business; signed Purchase and Sale Agreement showing assets were retained if a former owner sold it. Bankruptcy history must be disclosed.19

Securities, safe deposit boxes and other cases

  • Legal Representative Affidavit, notarized.18
  • Enclose the original certificate(s) and choose reissued stock or cash from sale.14

See also: claiming for a deceased relative and the claim documents tool.

How long it takes, how you are paid and the deadline

Processing time

  • Most claims within a few weeks of receipt; estate or stock claims may take longer. By law the Treasurer must approve or deny within 90 days of a complete claim and pay within 30 days of approval.2

How you are paid

Maine pays by check, so keep the mailing address on your claim current.

  • Check mailed to the claimant; stock may be reissued or sold for cash at the claimant's choice.3

Deadline

There is no deadline for owners and heirs in Maine.

  • No time limit4

Other states: dormancy periods table.

  • Minimum amounts: No minimum for reporting. Items under $50 with unknown owner information may be aggregated.8
  • Gift cards: Gift obligations are not reportable if last active in 2022 or later and remain a business liability until redeemed. They cannot expire and fees are barred except a disclosed issuance fee. In-person balances under $5 can be refunded in cash on request, unless the initial value was $5 or less. A stored-value obligation (a promise of goods, services or money, including prefunded reloadable cards; a card is one if it fails the gift-obligation test, for example because it can be converted to money or is tied to an account holder) stays reportable after 3 years.8
  • Published lists of owners: Online searchable website required; no newspaper requirement appears in §2103. The Treasurer may also use any printed or other media.32

Finder fees and heir finders in Maine

The legal limit in Maine: 15% for agreements made more than 24 but less than 36 months after delivery to the Treasurer. No percentage cap is stated for later agreements, but unconscionable compensation can be reduced by a court.5 You never need a finder: claiming directly is free.2

  • Are finders allowed? Yes, with limits. An agreement is void if made from the date property is presumed abandoned until 24 months after it reaches the Treasurer. Attorneys filing a claim on identified property or contesting a denial are excepted.5
  • Contract rules: Must be in writing, set out the property and services, be signed by the apparent owner, and state the value before and after the fee.5
  • The law: 33 M.R.S. §22015 (read the text)

Before signing with a finder, read how finders work.
