How to claim unclaimed property in Wyoming, step by step

Claims can be filed online on the official site.1 Cost: Free.1

  1. Search by last name or business name (first name, city, ZIP or Property ID optional) on the official portal.1
  2. Select your property and choose "Continue To File Claim", then follow the instructions.1
  3. Watch for an emailed claim form (PDF) within 30 minutes; check spam. The form lists the documents you must upload.2
  4. Upload documents at "Submit Evidence for your active claim" using the Claim ID (top right of the claim form) and the email used to start the claim.2
  5. Check the claim status online (wait at least 30 minutes after uploading); do not re-send documents unless asked, because each new upload sends the claim to the back of the queue.2
  6. Payment is issued by check (U.S. and Canada); "paid" status means the check was issued that day.2
  • Interest: No interest: the owner receives the principal amount turned over to the state4
  • If a claim is denied: A person aggrieved by a decision, or whose claim is not acted on within 90 days, may sue in the district court of the county where the claimant resides or of Laramie County, within 90 days of the decision or within 180 days of filing if no action was taken.4

The general process is in our how to claim guide.

Documents you need, by situation

These are the official requirements. The claim form for a specific property can ask for more.

Claiming your own property

  • Required documents are set per claim: the emailed claim form contains a checklist of what to upload.2
  • Individual owner: may be as simple as a copy of a driver's license; heirs and closed/dissolved businesses need additional documents.7
  • Upload rules: PDF, TIF, PNG or JPG; each file under 10MB; file names up to 100 characters (letters, numbers, dashes, underscores); no password protection.8
  • Virtual currency (Coinbase) accounts: proof the account was yours, such as screenshots of the account or Coinbase transaction emails showing the email address reported to Wyoming.9

The owner has died (estate)

  • Heir (deceased owner) claims are accepted but need additional documents listed on the emailed claim form and take longer than owner claims. The program cites no small-estate affidavit threshold.2

Securities, safe deposit boxes and other cases

  • Social Security number: used to verify identity; claimants may enter all zeroes instead, which may slow processing.2
  • Some claims require original documents that cannot be uploaded (the claim form says which).8
  • Claims through an asset finder: copy of the finder agreement and Wyoming's Finder Information Form, plus a signed and notarized limited power of attorney for the State to deal with the finder.5

Not listed in the official sources we checked: a former address or a name change and a business or government agency. The claim form shows what to send.

How long it takes, how you are paid and the deadline

Processing time

  • Standard/owner claims around 3-4 weeks (as of Oct 29, 2026); heir and dissolved-business claims may take longer. By statute the administrator must consider each claim within 90 days of filing.3

How you are paid

Wyoming pays by check and does not offer direct deposit, so keep the mailing address on your claim current.

  • Paper check to claimants in the United States or Canada (checks over $5,000 go by USPS certified mail); foreign wire transfer for claimants in other countries ($6 bank fee deducted). No direct deposit/ACH for U.S. claimants; the office says it is exploring ACH.2

Deadline

There is no deadline for owners and heirs in Wyoming.

  • No time limit: owners have a perpetual right to reclaim4

  • Gift cards: Reportable only if the balance is over $100 and unused for 5 years after the later of issuance or last owner activity; cards with no expiration date and no fees (other than an initial charge not above face value) are exempt.4
  • Published lists of owners: The Treasurer keeps two lists updated twice a year (all funds of $50+; property held 24+ months with amounts) open to public inspection, and must advertise newly received property within the next calendar year in a form of the administrator's choosing. Owners under $50 need not be advertised.4

Finder fees and heir finders in Wyoming

The legal limit in Wyoming: No percentage cap.5 You never need a finder: claiming directly is free.1

  • Are finders allowed? Yes, but finder agreements made within 24 months after the property is delivered to the state are unenforceable; finders need not register.5
  • Contract rules: Agreements made within 24 months after the holder pays the state are unenforceable; later agreements must be in writing; agreements for property still with a holder are unenforceable if made within 12 months before the holder's report date. The state pays only the owner, by check in the owner's name, and works with a finder only on a signed, notarized limited power of attorney.4
  • The law: W.S. 34-24-136 (Agreements to locate property)4 (read the text)

Before signing with a finder, read how finders work.
